The slogan for the 2008 European Football Championship is "Expect Emotions", a fitting insight as sixteen of Europe's best football nations prepare to battle for the glory and prestige of becoming the champions of Europe. Austria and Switzerland will co-host the event across eight cities, where over a million passionate supporters will witness the on-pitch action. Millions more will take to the streets and gather at festivals - the global TV audience is expected to exceed 1 billion. This makes the tournament one of the biggest football competitions on the planet, second only to the FIFA World Cup.

Euro 2008 Group Stage Preview

Group A: Switzerland, Czech Republic, Portugal, Turkey

The Czech Republic finished on top of their qualification group, losing only one game. Portugal were runners up in Euro 2004 and with first-class players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Quaresma they cannot be overlooked. Both should progress to the Quarterfinals with minimal fuss. The highlight match of the group will be when the group's two top contenders face off on 11 June.

Group B: Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland

Both Croatia and Germany find themselves with a solid chance at making it to the next stage from this group. Croatia impressed during qualifying with two victories over England, including the one that closed the door on the English campaign, while Germany is always in with a chance, especially so close to home. An interesting contest will be when co-host Austria plays neighbours Germany on June 16.

Group C: Netherlands, Italy, Romania, France

Not even a script writer could come up with a more exciting start to the Euro 2008 story. The Netherlands is a past champion, Italy is the World champion and France is looking to avenge its World Cup finals defeat at the hands of the Azzurri. Romania may seem a little out of place among the big guns of Europe, but they finished ahead of the Netherlands in qualifying and in such a volatile grouping anything is possible. Italy v France on 17 June is the game to look out for.

Group D: Greece, Sweden, Spain, Russia

Greece's victory in the 2004 European Championship took the world by surprise and although they qualified for Euro 2008 with ease, a second win would be even more astonishing. Sweden is a solid side with a good chance at making it through to the final eight and Spain, led by the likes of David Villa, Fabregas, Iniesta and Torres, will as always be a strong contender. Russia seems a bit out classed in this grouping. Greece's resolve will be thoroughly tested when they clash with Spain on 18 June.
